Ne rien perdre, ne rien oublier – Gabriel Okoundji 

C’est un poète qui vient du Nord du Congo. De la Cuvette Ouest. De la zone forestière et de ses cours d’eau immenses. Il écrit de la poésie depuis 1996 avec la régularité d’un métronome. D’abord aux éditions L’Harmattan, Elytis, puis chez William Blake and Co et Fédérop. Il réside en France  du côté de Bègles  aux abords de Bordeaux où il est psychologue clinicien.

J’ai lu Prière aux ancêtres (éd. Fédérop) il y a quelques années. Un ensemble de poèmes très profonds, chargés d’une spiritualité authentique et propre aux zones forestières de la République populaire du Congo. Dans Ne rien perdre, ne rien oublier la structure du texte est moins homogène. Cette anthologie rassemble d’anciens textes du poète congolais et un inédit. Ne connaissant pas assez le travail de Gabriel Okoundji, tous les textes de ce recueil sont nouveaux pour moi. Peut-être devrais-je parler de la forme de ces textes. «  III »  par exemple se présente comme 18 versets poétiques. Un mélange d’affirmations et d’interrogations. «  III-4 Autant de pluies que de soleils bâtissent l’enclos de ton histoire – retenir le précieux trésor ! ». C’est donc une sorte de séquence méditative, emprunte de sagesse. «  A qui donc demander la route ! »  questionne Okoundji. «  III-2 La route est longue, la terre est grande Au-delà de l’ombre, la vie tout entière – connaître l’obscurité fonde le parcours ! ». Le chemin, le parcours, la route, la vie, le moyen emprunté, ce qu’on dira de voie prise, la mort… En 18 séquences, le poète parle.

C’est un très beau poème. Je ne le citerai pas afin de vous pousser à lire l’ouvrage. Mais je pourrais le résumer par la formule : «  reste concentré, Gangoueus » .

Les mots totem

  • Bannière / Sa voix dit / Épreuve / Geste suprême / Contre épreuve

Quand on rapproche les mots totem éclatés, on retrouve une succession de vers cohérents autour d’un thème comme sous la bannière, où il semble être question du passage de vie à trépas, un étrange moment de mon point de vue. Mais que dit le poète :

de la mémoire en deuil »

le jour fait le jour
la nuit fait la nuit
l’aube parle à l’aube
mais personne n’entend le cri blême

Je me pose à la lecture de cet extrait. Tranquille. Je n’ai pas forcément envie de le commenter. Il y a toujours une part de mystère dans le discours d’un poète. Sans aucun mode d’emploi, on patauge. Une enfance parle donc du crépuscule. Des balbutiements de la vie à la fin de quelque chose, d’une trajectoire. Le lien avec la bannière ? Quand elle est en berne, peut-être nous renvoie-t-elle à la mort… Tandis que lorsqu’elle est brandie comme un étendard, elle est synonyme de combat et de jour, donc de vie.

Le dernier volet de ce recueil, intitulé Poème du terreau de l’enfance, est celui qui m’est le plus accessible même si à la relecture, j’apprécie mieux les premières séquences qui sont, dans le fond, très philosophiques. Par le terreau de l’enfance, ce sont des anecdotes mises en vers avec talent que nous offre le poète. On est dans la Cuvette Ouest, une région particulièrement  enclavée de la République du Congo.

On retrouve dans cette partie du texte la forme scandée, martelée avec autorité de la personne qui sait, de l’initié, du Mwené. En même temps, Gabriel Okoundji est un enfant du monopartisme marxiste congolais, fortement marqué par cette idéologie. Deux poèmes relatent l’expérience du pionnier que j’ai moi-même expérimenté dans les années 80. Il en parle avec une forme d’humour. C’est aussi une atmosphère et des personnages qui ont marqué cette enfance comme papa Ofnacom, Demopembe ou Totapen… La poésie, ça aide quand on veut analyser le sens des désignations. La générosité du fondateur du village d’Okondo, Corneille Waka dit Ngamba renommé par OFNACOM (ancien office national du commerce). C’est l’occasion pour Okoundji pour à la fois évoquer la philosophie, les valeurs de cet homme, ce père fondateur et d’incarner une période complexe, faste, organisée, régentée, dominée par une propagande d’état. Difficile en lisant ces poèmes de ne pas penser à Jazz et vin de palme d’Emmanuel Dongala avec ses analyses cocasses sur les tensions entre une idéologie étrangère et la culture congolaise…

Bref, Ne rien perdre, ne rien oublier, telle est l’attitude du Bordelais Okoundji.
